Building your Soccer Career: How to Win a College Scholarship
Often times, many individuals that may want to pursue a higher education may not have the opportunity to do so based on socio-economic factors. Nonetheless, such individuals may open up doors of opportunity for themselves be excelling at a sport and earning a scholarship from a university.
Those who excel at sports often have the opportunity to receive a scholarship from a university for their athletic excellent. Just as with basketball, football, or baseball, universities grant athletic scholarships for soccer players also. If an individual wants to get a soccer scholarship, he or she must undergo many years of preparation by taking those necessary steps involved with receiving one.
The first thing an individual must do to win a scholarship is identifying that they have an exceptional talent at a young age. If one does this, then it will allow them more time to develop their skills. After identifying this skill at an early age the best way to develop the talent is through practice and analogous competition. By practicing a player can improve their skills just as one may improve their skills in any other field, in so far as, the more one does something, the more they will perfect it. Thus, in soccer one should practice those skills that will make them better daily in practice settings. Certain skills that may be sharpened in practice are ball touch, striking, sliding, passing, and heading.ÂÂ
All these individual skills will ultimately make an individual a better player; however, none of them will benefit a player as much as constantly working with other players on the team. By doing this it will allow one to perfect their team skills, thus, effectively making the whole team better. Quite simply, it does not matter how many goals an individual scores if he or she does not make the team as a whole better because individual achievements does not win games. Thus, more often than not whenever a recruiter looks at a player he does so from within the context of how they affect their team. ÂÂ
Off the practice pitch one of the most important skills to perfect is physical endurance. During a soccer match, one must constantly be in motion all over the field; thus, one needs to be in ideal physical condition. When a recruiter looks for players, even if an individual is the best striker, he or she must be in proper physical conditioning. This will tell the recruiter that a player has initiative and that he would not have to baby sit and motivate that player - as an out of shape player inherently they care little about being the best possible player they can be. In order to sharpen this skill, one should subject themselves to a demanding cardiovascular regimen. Types of regimens may vary depending on preference; however, one thing should remain constant no matter what type of conditioning one chooses: always undergo the exercise for at least 60 minutes. Doing so will train your body to withstand any tiring one may endure while on the pitch.ÂÂ
Other important facets of winning a soccer scholarship include:
1. One should always seek the best coaching and tutoring, as receiving both will instill the proper techniques and strategical methodologies in a player. Furthermore, if one endears himself to the right coaches, then these same coaches often times will be able to get a college to give that player scholarship.
2. One should always surround himself with the right people. Doing this will build a positive support network that will assist them in actualizing their goals. If one surrounds himself with negativity, this can ultimately lead to negative outcomes.
3. To catch the eye of recruiters on needs to get exposure. The best way of doing this is by joining select league teams. These leagues are often the best local football players, thus, if one excels they shall gain a name for himself and eventually get the attention of football scouts.ÂÂ
4. Always having a good attitude will allow an individual to stay positive and continue to strive in actualizing their goals. A positive attitude, along with a positive support network will help one persist through any struggle they may encounter.
5. Maintaining good grades is a must. This is because in order to go to college one must have high enough grades and pass an entrance exam. Not only this but maintaining good grades will reflect on one character positively; thus, it may prove to be the difference between you and the next lad wining a scholarship
