Helicopter Skiing – The Ultimate Adventure Sport

Published by Jennifer at 8:45 pm under Skiing

If you’ve seen footage of skiers and snowboarders going down a seemingly untouched mountain, you’ve likely wondered how they get there. And, if you’re a skier, you’ve probably also wondered how you can do it to. It’s helicopter skiing (or heli sking), and if you have the money and the skills, you can try it too.

What is Helicopter Skiing?

Whenever you go downhill skiing, you are limited by your ability to get to the top of the mountain. This usually means that you ski at a resort that is equipped with a ski lift. But more experienced skiers want the adventure of skiing down untracked snow. For those skiers, helicopter skiing provides them that opportunity.

Helicopter skiing means taking a helicopter to the top of a mountain and skiing down the freshly fallen untouched snow. Helicopter skiing is very popular among professional skiers and snowboarders, and should only be done by skiers with a great deal of experience and athletic ability. It can be dangerous, but can also be the ultimate skiing adventure.

How do I Try Helicopter Skiing?

Helicopter skiing is generally booked through a private company devoted to helicopter skiing packages. These companies have the rights to bring skiers to areas that are inaccessible to the general public. In the United States, most helicopter skiing packages are on the Rocky Mountains. There are also several companies that book helicopter ski packages in Alaska.

If you want to travel abroad to go skiing, you can book a package in the Alps, Himalayas, or other mountain ranges in Europe. Helicopter skiing is also popular in Canada and New Zealand. Most companies offer several day packages. These packages include not only your helicopter transportation from run to run (usually five to ten runs in one day), but lodging and meals for your trip as well. A number of companies also employ a photographer to record your skiing.

What Should I Know Before Booking?

Before you book a helicopter ski package, there are several things to consider. First, you should check to see if the company is a member of the US Heli Ski Association. Booking with a member gives you the peace of mind that you are in good hands. Second, you want to consider if your abilities are really up to the challenge of helicopter skiing.

The US Heli Ski Association recommends that you should be a solid advanced skier who can make consistent linked turns down a groomed black diamond run. You will also want to consider the time and location of your trip. Look at where the lodging is located, and think about whether you want a more remote lodge or to stay in a busy mountain town. The time of year can make a difference too, as the snow varies throughout the winter.

95% of the worlds heliskiing is done in BC Canada, and for good reason. The endless terrain – steep naturally gladed trees and huge alpine bowls get 40-60 feet of dry powder each year. Canada has the same standard for moutain guides (ACMG) as Europe (UIAGM) very skilled, highly trained and experts in mechanized skiing – if you want to go heliskiing, dont ever settle for anything less. Go to the best try Mica Heli Guides out of Revelstoke BC.
